The Physiology of Hunger

Hunger has organic, psychological, social causes and affects wide masses of people all around the world. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warns that carrying on economical crisis can push much more people into the hunger and poverty. It is known that hunger has many effects on different organ systems as a result of which causes metabolic and anatomic disorders. For understanding the complications of hunger, evaluation of its mortality and morbidity and for preparing new treatment protocols, stage of disease should be understood carefully.
Underlying etiology of hunger, its stage, existing comorbidities and attainable food resources can lead hunger treatment. There are a variety of treatment strategies depend on the cause of hunger whether it is because of an absolute lack of energy intake or it is because of inadequate energy intake.

Açlık organik, psikolojik ve sosyal nedeni olan ve dünyada geniş kitleleri etkileyen bir durumdur. Birleşmiş Milletler Gıda ve Tarım Teşkilatı (FAO), devam eden ekonomik ve mali krizin çok daha fazla insanı açlık ve yoksulluğa itebileceği uyarısında bulunulmuştur. Açlığın metabolik ve yapısal olarak birçok sistem üzerinde etkili olduğu bilinmektedir. Komplikasyonların anlaşılması, mortalitenin/morbiditenin değerlendirilmesi ve tedavi protokolünün hazırlanması açısından hastanın açlığın hangi evresinde olduğu bilinmelidir. Tedavide açlığın altta yatan nedeni, saptandığı evresi, ek hastalık varlığı ve bu süreçte alınabilmiş gıda özellikleri belirleyici olmaktadır. Mutlak enerji yoksunluğu ile yetersiz enerji alımında, tedavi ve yaklaşımlar farklı olmaktadır.
