The Effect of Interferon in Mumps Orchitis

The most important complication of mumps infection in adolescent males which can often lead to testicular atrophy is orchitis. We evaluated the efficiency of interferon a 2B in mumps orchitis. Seventeen patients with mumps orchitis treated with interferon a 2B (3 miliion units/day for 7 days) to prevent the testicular atrophy and pain. Mean follow up as 17.4 months (13-35 months). Scrotal pain and tenderness decreased within 48 hours in 12 patients and testicular swelling disappeared in all of the patients on the fifth day. Testicular atrophy developed in 3 patients. Interferon a 2B is effective in the treatment of mumps orchitis, because of decreased rate of atrophy and alleviation of symptoms in short period.

Kabakulak Orşitinde İnterferon Tedavisinin Etkisi

Yetişkin erkeklerde görülen kabakulak enfeksiyonunun en önemli koplikasyonu orşittir ve testiküler atrofiye neden olabilir. Testiküler atrofiyi, ağrıyı ve iş gücü kaybını önlemek amacıyla, kabakulak orşiti olan olgularda interferon a 2B'nin etkinliği araştırılmıştır. 1 Olgu iki taraflı olmak üzere, toplam 17 kabakulak orşitli olguya 7 gün süreyle, günde 3 milyon IU/SC. İnterferon a 2Bverilmiş ve olgular ortalama 17.4 ay (13-35) izlenmiştir. 12 olguda ilk 48 saat içinde ağrı ve hassasiyette azalma görülmüş ve tüm olgularda testisteki şişlik 5.günde kaybolmuştur. 3 olguda (%17.6) testis atrofisi gelişmiştir. Semptomları çok kısa sürede yatıştırması ve atrofi oranını azaltması nedeniyle interferon a 2B kabakulak orşitli olguların tedavisinde etkili bulunmuştur.
