Burch colposuspension: Evaluation of perioperative complications of operations performed in our clinic

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to determine perioperative complications of Burch colposuspension.
METHODS: The Burch colposuspension operations performed in 2013-2018 at our hospital by gynaecologists, were reviewed retrospectively using hospital data system and patient files. The complications, intraoperative and occurred before discharging a patient, were accepted as perioperative complications. General characteristics of the patients, the types of concomitant operations, the relationship between the groups with and without complications were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: Perioperative complications were observed in 98 (39%) of 248 patients included in the study. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of patient age, number of pregnancies and duration of operation among the patients who developed and did not develop complications. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the number of births, body mass index (BMI), haemoglobin drop, presence of previous incontinence surgery and comorbid disease. The length of hospital stay and duration of bladder catheter stay were significantly longer in the group with complications.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: For patients who are planned to undergo open abdominal surgery, have developed mesh complications in their previous operations or do not want to take the risk of this complication, Burch colposuspension is a good option. Knowing the possible risks and complications of Burch colposuspension will reduce the perioperative complication rate, increase the success rate and patient satisfaction.

Burch kolposüspansiyon: Kliniğimizde gerçekleştirilen operasyonların perioperatif komplikasyonlarının değerlendirilmesi

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu çalışma Burch kolposüspansiyonun perioperatif komplikasyonlarını belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: 2013 ve 2018 yılları arasında hastanemizde stres üriner inkontinans nedeniyle jinekologlar tarafından gerçekleştirilmiş olan Burch kolposüspansiyon operasyonları, hastane veri sistemi ve hasta dosyaları kullanılarak retrospektif olarak incelendi. İntraoperatif ve taburcu olmadan ortaya çıkan komplikasyonlar, perioperatif komplikasyon olarak kabul edildi. Hasta genel özellikleri, eş zamanlı gerçekleştirilen operasyon tipleri, komplikasyon gelişen ve gelişmeyen gruplar arasında ilişki istatistiksel olarak incelendi.
BULGULAR: Çalışmaya dahil edilen 248 hastanın 98 (%39)’ unda perioperatif komplikasyon gelişmiş olduğu görüldü. Komplikasyon gelişen ve gelişmeyen hastalar arasında hasta yaşı, gebelik sayısı ve operasyon süresi bakımından gruplar arasında istatistiki anlamlı fark yoktu. Doğum sayısı, vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ), hemoglobin düşüşü, komorbid hastalık ve geçirilmiş inkontinans cerrahisi varlığı bakımından gruplar arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark saptandı. Komplikasyon gelişen grupta hastanede yatış süresi ve mesane kateter kalış süresi istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ölçüde daha uzundu.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Eş zamanlı açık batın cerrahisi planlanan, daha önceki operasyonlarında meş komplikasyonları gelişmiş veya bu komplikasyon riskini almak istemeyen hastalar için, Burch kolposüspansiyon iyi bir seçenektir. Burch kolposüspansiyonun olası risk ve komplikasyonlarının bilinmesi, perioperatif komplikasyon oranı azaltacak, cerrahi başarı şansını ve hasta memnuniyetini artıracaktır.
